Keep This In A Safe Spot All School Year!!
Book Projects
Every month you will be required to read a book of a different genre and design a project about that book.
- is a list of the kinds of books that our class will read each month and a list of the projects. There will be some class time to work on these projects, but most of the work will need to be completed at home. We will be presenting these projects in class each month. Hopefully, by the end of the presentations students will be eager to read books that other students have presented. I have attached a list of the months, genres, and projects for your future reference. Students will choose books from here at school, so don’t worry about trying to fit the genres at home. Due dates can be found on our monthly newsletters. I will send out monthly reminders about the project due that month as well. Happy Reading!!

Project: The Search for the Great Pumpkin
This is a fun project that will require some help from you at home. Please buy a pumpkin (one that can be carried easily to school), and then design the pumpkin to personify your favorite character in the mystery book you read. You may use yarn, wigs, paint, old clothes, tag board, etc. to complete this project. Please don’t carve the pumpkin otherwise it may get rotten too quickly. I like to display these pumpkins for our Halloween costume parade.
November-
Project: Brown Bag It
- a brown or white paper bag. Decorate the outside of the bag to show the cover or your realistic fiction book or scenes from your favorite chapter. Inside the bag, put objects from home which reminds you of the story. Give a report to the class by digging into the bag and describing the relevance of each item to the story.
December-
Project: Story Display
Use a 9x18 sheet of construction paper. On one side write the title and author of the book in block or bubble letters with color. Turn the paper over and fold into 3 equal sections. Draw a line all the way across, 3 inches from the bottom of each section. Label the first section (at the top) CHARACTER. Draw and color your favorite character of the historical fiction book. At the bottom of the section write a sentence describing your character. Label the next part SETTING, and draw a picture to show the setting of the story. Write a sentence at the bottom of the section about the setting of the story. On the last section, label it PLOT, and draw a picture to demonstrate the plot or problem in the story. Finally, write a sentence at the bottom describing your picture.
January-
Project: Diorama
Use a shoe box. Cover the inside with construction paper or cloth. Glue scenery, props, and characters to the inside to give it a 3-D effect. Hang objects from the ceiling with string. This should look like a stage. This diorama should show your favorite event from the fantasy book you read this month.
February
Project: Character Mask
You are going to make a mask of the person your biography is about. Stretch out the bottom of a wire hanger to make a diamond or oval shape. Then take a pair of old pantyhose or nylons, and slip one of the legs around the hanger and tie it at the top with yarn. Cut yarn or ribbon for hair and glue on to mask. Use colored construction paper, buttons, yarn, etc. to make eyes, nose, and a mouth. Add any other details you would like to your mask to represent your person. Be ready to explain to the class what your book, who your person is, and some interesting things he/she did.
March-
Project: Poetry Reading
This month you will pick a poem of your own choosing, that I will help you select in class. Your job will be to memorize your poem to be able to recite to the class. You need to also add some actions to your poem as well to make your oral reading more interesting and exciting. I will help you with practicing and adding actions to your poem as well in class. You will need to do some practice for parents and family at home.
April-
Project: Recipe
Use with the story Freckle Juice by Judy Blume. Your child will have a copy of this book to read for this month, but the majority of the reading and the work will be done in school for this month. So parents have nothing to worry about for this month!

Project: Third Grade Play
For our final book project we perform a play for parents and other classes in the school. So the only work you will have to do at home is to memorize and rehearse your lines for the play. More information will come home in the spring about the play and parts.
